A Special Earth Day as We Consider Our Planet from Outer Space
As a nation and as the world, we were all captivated by the Artemis II mission. And we were reminded of just how special our home planet is. As Victor Glover shared:
“When I read the Bible and I look at all of the amazing things that were done for us, who were created, you have this amazing place, this spaceship. You guys are talking to us because we’re in a spaceship really far from Earth. But you’re on a spaceship called Earth that was created to give us a place to live in the universe, in the cosmos…. In all of this emptiness — this whole bunch of nothing we call the universe — you have this oasis [of earth], this beautiful place that we get to exist in together.”
And Christina Koch reflected:
“The thing that changed for me, looking back at Earth, was that I found myself noticing not only the beauty of Earth, but how much blackness there was around it and how it just made it even more special. It truly emphasized how alike we are, how the same thing keeps every single person on planet Earth alive. We evolved on the same planet, and we have some shared things about how we love and live that are just universal. And the specialness and preciousness of that really is emphasized when you notice how much else there is around it.”
So, this Earth Day, TriState Water Works would like to share some earth-friendly tips on something we know about: water conservation.
4 General Water-Saving Tips for Outdoors
Take these ideas into consideration for your home:
- Fix any slow leaks from outdoor faucets. “A leaky faucet can waste one gallon per day or 29 gallons per month if it drips at a rate of 10 drips per minute.”
- Cover your pool or hot tub when you’re not using it. Covers reduce water loss from evaporation. Uncovered pools can lose thousands of gallons of water to evaporation each year.
- Start harvesting rainwater. Here’s our quick-start guide.
- Lay down mulch in your landscaping beds and around trees. This helps prevent evaporation.
6 Irrigation Tips for Saving Water
There are many ways TriState Water Works can help you save water with your sprinkler system.
- Smart watering: Installing a Hydrawise controller is the #1 way to optimize your sprinkler system to use just the right amount of water to keep your lawn and landscape thriving.
- Install a flow meter: Smart watering customers can super-charge our diagnostic abilities by installing a flow meter. This device feeds information into the system that detects and locates leaks and malfunctions.
- Sprinkler head replacement: Your system may have inefficient sprinkler heads that are wasting water (and money). Ask us about more efficient options.
- Optimize your sprinkler schedule: Often, watering less often for a longer time is better for your lawn. We can take a look at your property and recommend the best watering schedule and time to water.
- Catch slow leaks in the act: Our mid-summer Cycle and Inspect Service assesses and repairs any problems that don’t show up at Spring Start-Up.
- Install drip irrigation for beds and containers. Drip irrigation delivers water exactly where it’s needed and prevents waste. Also, drip irrigation is less prone to evaporation.
