5 Summer Water Conversation Tips

Top Ways to Save Money & Water

With this heatwave, it’s shaping up to be a “Cruel Summer” here in the TriState. Use these summer water conservation tips to avoid a painful water bill. Water prices aren’t going down, that’s for sure. In 2025, Greater Cincinnati Water Works increased rates by 5.5% (following a similar increase in both 2023 and 2024).

  1. Check for drips, inside and out. Dripping faucets, laundry connections, hose spigots or sprinkler heads are consistent wasters of water, accumulating about a gallon per day, each and every day. Along with  increasing your water bill, water damage is a significant risk to your floor or foundation. Although you’ll need a plumber for home plumbing repairs, TriState Water Works is here for all your irrigation repair needs.
  2. Smart watering optimizes water use. In our experience, a smart watering system will use up to 50% less water than a typical system. If water conservation is important to you, this is the #1 tip for your sprinkler system. Your results could be even more dramatic. In many cases, we’ve tracked that our customers use 80% less water.
  3. Landscaping choices matter. To save water over time, redesign more of your yard to feature landscaping beds instead of lawns. For an extra water-saving boost, choose native plants that naturally thrive in the Cincinnati area. Also, mulch your landscaping beds and around trees. A two-inch-thick layer will absorb water and prevent it from evaporating or causing erosion.
  4. Use water when it won’t evaporate. During the heat of the day, water evaporates faster. If you need to get out the hose to water some plants or wash your car, try to do it during the morning or evening hours. It will be more pleasant for you, as well! Also, cover your pool with a solar cover when you’re not using it. Not only will this prevent some evaporation, but it will also better absorb the heat of the day.
  5. Maintain your irrigation system for hot weather. A Summer Cycle & Inspect service will catch any leaks, drips or poorly aligned sprinkler heads. We’ll make sure your water is going where it’s supposed to be, keeping your lawn and landscaping healthy.
