Our Earth is Amazing: 5 Fast Facts
Because we live here, sometimes we overlook how incredible the planet Earth really is. We usually don’t even capitalize the name of our world, unless we’re referring to it with the other planets, like Mars. Wrap your mind around these incredible earth facts.
- We have about 435,000 land plant species. Plant that in your garden!
- There are more than 1.5 million animal species. Most are insects or mollusks, and 65,000 of them are vertebrates.
- The planet holds about 1,386,000,000 cubic kilometers of water, which is pretty much an un-imaginable figure. 71% of the earth’s surface is covered in water.
- Today, there is just one human species. All 8.2 billion of us share common ancestry.
- Earth may not be the largest planet, but it is the densest. Thanks to our metals, minerals and silicate rocks, our terrestrial planet is hefty.
Get to Know Your Earth!
Spending time outside with nature is the perfect way to get to know our home planet. And it’s really healthy for the humans in your life, too. Here are five ways to celebrate Earth Day.
- Take a nature walk, either in a park or your own neighborhood. Notice everything around you, from the ground to the trees to the sky. What’s growing right now? What are the animals up to?
- Plant some cold-weather seeds outdoors. Cincinnati is in growing zone 6, so April is a good time to directly sow seeds in your outdoor garden (or container garden). The risk for frost is still too high to plant annuals or perennials. Here’s a helpful guide.
- Clean out your landscaping beds, to get ready for the burst of beautiful growth. It’s good to leave insulating cover on your landscaping beds during winter, but just as important to clean the rubbish out in the spring to prevent rot.
- Start a compost pile with the leaf litter left over from autumn. Here are some good tips for Composting at Home.
- Get up close and personal with birds. I recently added a smart bird feeder to my yard and am delighted with the videos and pictures I get every day. I don’t have to sit around with binoculars, and the birds are never bothered with my presence. There are many brands, but I went with Bird Buddy.
At TriState Water Works, we will celebrate Earth Day by optimizing irrigation systems during Sprinkler System Spring Start-Ups. We’ll fix leaks, adjust sprinkler heads, and take all the steps needed to conserve water, and improve the health of lawns and landscaping. Hopefully, we’ll also be upgrading systems to Smart Watering, which helps save up to 50% on water use (with our customers, we’ve sometimes seen even greater savings!).
If sprinkler system maintenance and repair is part of your spring to-do list, contact us.
