Winterize Sprinkler System Question 1: Why Do I Need this Irrigation Service?
Winterize sprinkler system service is the #1 most important irrigation maintenance appointment. If you don’t do it, you likely won’t have a sprinkler system next year. Any water that is left in the pipes, valves, sprinkler heads or backflow device over the winter will freeze and break these components.
It’s not enough to simply turn off your system. It needs to be winterized.

Winterize Sprinkler System Question 2: When Does this Irrigation Service Happen?
Sprinkler system winterization needs to be complete before the threat of freezing temperatures. Depending on the weather in the Cincinnati area, we start winterizing systems as early as September. We finish by Thanksgiving. In late November, it’s all too likely that we’ll experience at least one overnight freeze.

Winterize Sprinkler System Question 3: How Long Does It Take?
It takes about five minutes to winterize each zone. So, if you have 10 zones, we’ll be at your property about an hour.
We value your time, and make every effort to arrive on-time for appointments. With certain installations, some clients don’t even need to be home for their appointments. But check with the office about your particular sprinkler system.

Winterize Sprinkler System Question 4: What’s Involved?
There are five steps to winterize a sprinkler system. The goal is to remove all water from the system.
- At the main shut-off valve, turn off water to the sprinklers
- Hook a low-pressure air compressor up to the sprinkler system
- Protect the backflow device from air pressure. This device is only meant for water, not air
- Blowout each zone for two minutes to remove most water in the pipes
- Blowout each zone for an additional minute to remove any remaining water droplets

To professionally winterize a sprinkler system might cost less than you think. TriState Water Works Plus Program clients pay $95 for one to six zones (additional zones are $12 apiece). While that’s our best pricing, you may expect to pay $115 for one to six zones, with each additional zone $15 more if you’re looking for a one-time service.

Winterize Sprinkler System Question 6: Can I Do It Myself?
While you can do it yourself, professional winterization is your best option. We use a specific air compressor that doesn’t put too much pressure on the system. Air compressors that you rent or use to fill up tires might loosen pipe connections and cause leaks throughout the system.
